A box-office number needs a measure, territory, time period and source. “The film collected this much” is incomplete when it does not tell readers whether the amount is India net, India gross or worldwide gross. Those labels cannot be exchanged without changing the meaning.

Gross and net

Gross describes ticket revenue before the relevant ticket taxes are removed. Net describes revenue after those taxes. The exact reporting basis should come from the source, especially when a total combines different markets. Net does not mean the producer's profit.

In the cited Mandaadi report, The Week gives separate India net and India gross amounts. We preserve those labels in our Mandaadi collection table rather than showing two figures as competing answers to the same question. Source report.

Worldwide and overseas

A worldwide figure combines domestic and overseas business under the source's method. If the overseas component is already included, adding it again inflates the total. Before comparing two films, check that both reports cover the same territory and reporting stage.

Currency conversion can also affect a combined total. This site does not create a worldwide amount by taking isolated regional numbers and choosing its own exchange rates. When a source supplies a worldwide figure, we attribute that figure and keep the source date visible.

What is distributor share?

Distributor share concerns the portion flowing through distribution arrangements after the applicable exhibitor terms and deductions. It is not interchangeable with gross ticket sales. Contracts differ, so a gross figure alone cannot supply an exact share or recovery calculation.

Similarly, a film's stated production budget is not automatically its complete cost base. Marketing and release terms can matter. This guide does not supply a standard profit formula or infer a hit-or-flop verdict from a headline total.

Reported numbers are snapshots

Early figures can be estimates, and later reports can revise them. Keep the original source and its publication date beside the amount. If sources disagree, say whether they use different measures or dates before presenting the difference as an error.

A quick reading check

  1. Identify the territory: a state, India, overseas or worldwide.
  2. Identify the measure: gross, net, share or another defined basis.
  3. Check the reporting date and whether the figure is provisional.
  4. Open the named source rather than relying on a reposted image.
  5. Compare like measures and avoid counting the same component twice.

The site's box-office section includes attributed reporting and this reading guide. It does not publish unsourced leaderboards, invented budgets or unverified daily totals.
